Mrs. Leckband's and Mrs Weber's 1st Grade News

We are enjoying the spring, and are beginning to see that the end of the year will come much too soon.

We have now counted with dimes, nickels and pennies at school. Some children still need to practice that skill. A fun way to do that is to give them a small handful of change - if they can identify coins and values, and count it correctly - they get to keep it!

<*dv_1*>When we come back on Monday, we’ll be into daylight savings time. We often have tired, grumpy kids for a while at that point. You may want to adjust your schedule, especially if your child has been doing homework after supper. It may be easier to just do it right away, because there is still plenty of daylight after supper.

<*dv_3*>The note for the electives classes came home on Wednesday. Please fill in and return to school as soon as possible. Your child can only choose one!

“Ice cubes” will be sold on Wednesday this coming week, and then each Thursday. Please help cool our school! We still need someone to be the ice cube helper those mornings!

The magazine fund raiser packet came home on Thursday. Children are to return their postcards on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday next week, and then that’s it!

<*dv_6*>Have a blessed week.

Love and Logic

The best technique in the world won’t work if your kids don’t believe you will back your words with actions

------------------------------------

What we will be learning listed below.

<*dv_5*>What we will be learning -

Social Studies

We are beginning our unit on neighborhoods. There will be more map work, and children will learn about different parts of the United States.

Phonics

We will be learning about prefixes this week: -un, -dis, and -pre

Religion:
<*dv_0*> This week we will talk about Good Friday and Jesus suffering and dying on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins.

Computers

We are going to work on Math Splash this week

Science

We are studying the effects of pollution on our environment (air, water and soil.)

Language

We will be continuing to work with sentences that have adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases. We will also introduce singular and plural nouns.

Memory

Acts 26:22
I have had God’s help to this very day.

No spelling test this week

Gym

<*dv_4*>We started our ball game. It is 3 strikes, etc. but without keeping score. This has been hard as the pitcher has not always had a good pitch...I hope they develop a keen eye! This will be going on until Easter. Any extra practice that they receive at home is a big help.

Math

We will be learning to measure line segments using centimeters. We will learn the -1 subtraction facts. The children need to continue practicing counting pennies, nickels and dimes.

Reading

Mrs. Weber’s group put together their own version of “Green Eggs” and will send it home 1 by 1. We did start the purple reader. With the AR, I am encouraging chapter books.
Mrs. Leckband’s group will be beginning the Level 5-1 reader. They are also working hard on their Accelerated Reader books. Nine out of thirteen readers have now read and passes tests on chapter books.
